"The biggest picture I painted in Japan. I lived in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, with armchairs without legs, a low table, only about high enough (approx. 40 cm) to stretch your legs through or to sit cross-legged before it or in a Roman reclining position on one's elbows. The floor was covered by tatami mats. The painting was on the little table, which was only about 70 cm square, and stuck far out in the room. As it was a difficult physical undertaking to stand up and paint at another point in the picture, I turned the painting horizontally around its midpoint and painted as far as the arm could reach. Thus the structural composition of the painting came about in a perfectly natural way and of itself, with a blue lake in the centre and a garden fence on the edge."

"From the antipodes I faxed one sheet of typing paper, an ink drawing, per day for thirty days to a lady I was friends with; these could then be put together, six across and five rows down, to form a large consecutive picture. I began at the upper left and didn't know how I would go on drawing the next day: a procedure I had already followed in 1952 with the tapestry 133 Pissing Boy with Skyscraper. The thirty sheets were then copied on primed paper and mounted on canvas in the proper sequence and painted with mixed techniques, i. e., watercolour, acrylic paint, tempera, oil, lacquer and metal. This picture turned into one of my biggest adventures as a painter. As to the thematic material, which came about of itself, as it were, it is decidedly of a fairy-tale nature, as if from a children's book - a collection of Hundertwasser motifs. The dogmatic world of architecture refuses to concede that the architecture most fitting to man is to be found in children's drawings and fairy-tale books. It shouldn't be all that difficult to turn what children dream up into constructed reality."

"An important picture, as I dreamed up my later architectural work in it. As I did not think it was possible that I would ever build such a thing, I painted it. You can do that without a building permit, you know. A house on which forests live in storeys. With the elevator you come to the forest on the third or fourth storey. The lodgings for people are subordinate to the living space of the trees and are suspended on the undersides of the forests. I painted the picture in mid-winter, with snow in front of the windows of my mill in the Waldviertel. This was a time when the events of my life followed in rapid succession: nude demonstrations, the architect manifesto "Loose from Loos", voyages with the Regentag, a film by Peter Schamoni, the death of my mother and the beginning of my friendship with Joram Harel, to whom I confided my wish to be able to transform what I painted into real houses. He kept his word, and what seemed to be incredible came true."

And then a leap to the side to avoid being run over by a speeding rival who had been lying in wait for me in his car."
