Hundertwasser comment about the work:
„The painting is from 1952. I painted it near Assisi on the way to Arezzo. At the time I was going through a very happy period. I was quite poor. I think one can also see that it is a very happy painting. I hadn't seen the painting for many years. I sold it at the exhibition in Venice in the Sandri Gallery - I think for 5000 lire - and didn't see it again for ten years. Now it has suddenly surfaced in Mexico, and I am very surprised to see this painting again. I can't imagine that I painted it myself. I see for example that there are faces everywhere in the houses and that the driver is even pushing a nose to the side here at the car door. I was sent a transparency of this painting from Mexico. The cut was made from the transparency. (from: Hundertwasser, Buchheim Verlag, Feldafing, 1964 and ed. 1973, p. 30) I painted the picture at the Bargellinis' home. They had taken me home with them when I was hitchhiking. I can remember that I fell asleep on an excursion and that when I woke up Bernardina Bargellini was sitting next to me. Her son is a musician and visited me in Vienna. There is a good photograph of me and the painting at the Bargellinis'."
